Liposuction is a method of removing pockets of fat buildup through tiny incisions that are strategically placed in different body areas. A narrow cannula is inserted into these incisions, and the fat is then removed with a suction device. Liposuction can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific body areas, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, upper arms, chin, cheeks or neck. Liposuction can be performed safely in an outpatient setting, so long as the total amount removed is judicious. Liposuction is commonly performed in combination with other procedures, such as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast reduction and breast augmentation.

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. Age is not a major consideration. However, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger person with tighter skin. Patients who already have significant skin laxity (hanging skin) will possibly be better served with some other type of open body contouring procedure, such as a tummy tuck or other skin-tightening procedure. Liposuction is a very safe procedure when performed correctly. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, make sure you alert Dr. Brenner to any pre-existing medical conditions that you have (i.e., an unrepaired hernia).
After surgery, you will likely experience some fluid drainage from the incisions; this is normal. To control swelling and help your skin better fit its new contours, you may be fitted with a snug elastic garment that is worn over the treated area for up to six weeks. For the first few days after surgery, you will need to wear this garment day and night. Sponge bathing will be most efficient during this time. You will have a follow up appointment with Dr. Brenner for suture removal about five to seven days after your operation. At this time, you may be fitted into a slightly smaller compression garment.
Strenuous activity should be avoided for about one month. Although most of the bruising usually disappears within three weeks, some swelling may remain for six months or more. Dr. Brenner will schedule follow-up visits to monitor your progress.
